EU Registers Chinese Silicon From 27 Oct: CN 2804 69 00, Nine Months, Duty 16.3-16.8%

The European Commission has ordered customs to register imports of Chinese silicon metal from 27 October, covering CN code 2804 69 00 for nine months, with provisional anti-dumping duties of 16.3% to 16.8% on the table. Registration costs importers nothing today but keeps the door open to backdated duties, so the decision point is the entry date rather than the ruling date: any entry made from 27 October can be assessed retroactively once the investigation concludes.

LA Overseas Warehouse: 11,016 Bins in 600 sqm, Storage Up 400%, Labour Cost -75%

A Los Angeles overseas warehouse fitted 11,016 bins into 600 square metres with a gantry robot and a 3D shuttle system, lifting storage capacity by 400% and cutting labour cost per unit by 75%, with pick speed up threefold. The number that matters is not the robot but the density: at roughly 18 bins a square metre the same rent covers four times the stock, which changes how much safety inventory a shipper can hold near the US West Coast.

China-Europe East Corridor Clears 6,024 Trains in 2026, Up 40.3%, 83.7 a Day

China's eastern corridor, the busiest China-Europe rail route, cleared 6,024 trains in 2026, up 40.3% year on year and averaging 83.7 departures a day, with volume through its main gate already past 7,000 for the year. Growth is running ahead of the classic Alashankou and Khorgos crossings, shifting where westbound inland rail capacity sits and how much of it depends on a single border point. For shippers the question is whether the extra slots land on the lanes they actually use.

Sea-Intelligence: Double Sailings Pushed Golden Week Capacity to a Record 393,000 TEU

Deployed capacity on the transpacific and Asia-Europe trades during Golden Week was the highest on record. Asia-US west coast weekly capacity hit 393,000 TEU vs a normal sub-300,000 TEU, with Asia-Mediterranean up 18% on the third quarter and Asia-US east coast up 15%. Between 2012 and 2019 the same window cut capacity by 8%, 6%, 16% and 21%. Typhoon congestion bunched vessels, and delayed ships cascaded into October and November as double sailings, inflating the sailing base and suppressing the blanked share.

U.S. Rail Intermodal Up 12.6% in Week 41 as Diesel and Truck Capacity Push Freight onto Rail

U.S. weekly rail traffic reached 540,135 carloads and intermodal units in the week ending Oct. 17, up 8.5% on 2025, AAR said on 21 October. Carloads rose 3.5% to 232,120, while containers and trailers jumped 12.6% to 308,015. Across nine North American railroads the total gained 7.2% to 731,715, with intermodal up 10.8%. Year to date U.S. intermodal is 11,687,964 units, up 4.6%. Diesel near a five-year high and truck capacity leaving tip long-haul economics toward rail. Lock ramp space and drayage now.

One Reefer Load in Five Is Turned Down: SONAR Puts Rejections at 21.44% on Oct 20

Refrigerated truckload tender rejections ran at 21.44% nationally on 20 October, near the 22.13% peak of 17 September and well clear of the 20.89% low on 24 September, per FreightWaves SONAR data. The headline rejection index is 13.9% while accepted tender volume slipped about 2% week over week to roughly 11,000, so capacity, not demand, is doing the work. Reefer spot rates are up about 28% year to date against a 9% contract gain, a 19-point gap that lands at renewal. Tightest: the Pacific Northwest and Midwest.

USTR Port Fee Pause on China-Linked Ships Ends Nov 9; Talks Point to a Jan 10 Delay

Port fees on China-linked vessels under USTR's Section 301 maritime action run only to 9 November 2026. Platts reported on 19-20 October that Washington is expected to extend the pause to 10 January 2027, with US coal exporters worried about dearer freight. No USTR notice had been filed as of 22 October, so the written rule stands: USD 50 per net ton on ships a Chinese entity owns or operates, and the higher of USD 18 per net ton or USD 120 per container discharged on Chinese-built ships.

EU makes product identifiers mandatory Nov 1, adding EUR 5 per item on small parcels

From 1 November, businesses shipping direct to EU consumers must put product identifiers on the invoice and customs dataset for consignments of EUR 150 or less. The EU charges EUR 5 per item: the EUR 3 flat duty started in July 2026 and runs to July 2028, plus a provisional EUR 2 handling fee. Three identifiers are accepted: M-PID, NS-PID and S-PID, using GTIN, EAN or UPC. Missing data can hold parcels and trigger fines. Dutch customs logged 46% fewer e-commerce declarations in July and August.
