Typhoon Saudel and Zitan hit East and South China as a third system adds to port risk

China's meteorological authority kept blue typhoon and rainstorm alerts in force on 22 August as No.18 Saudel tracked northwest some 550km north-east of Guam at 10-15km/h, forecast to reach super-typhoon strength around 23 August. No.19 Zitan, formed on 21 August, was due to loop over the Beibu Gulf before landfall on the Guangxi-Leizhou coast. Fujian coastal cities were forecast 50-80mm of rain, locally 180mm, as Shanghai and Ningbo still clear an earlier typhoon backlog.
